| Director's Spotlight on a Silver Celebration for the Regional Employment Board
The Regional Employment Board of Hampden County (REB), a Director's Partner of the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield (ACCGS) recently celebrated its 25th anniversary by hosting a "Champions of Literacy" Appreciation Luncheon. The event, held Friday, December 10th, honored Craig Brown as the "Pre-eminent Community Volunteer" for his 25 years of superior leadership and distinguished volunteer service to the region's workforce.
Born in Springfield, MA, Craig has been an Attorney at the Law Offices of Doherty, Wallace, Pillsbury, & Murphy, P.C. since 1977, graduating Dartmouth College, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa in 1974 and Georgetown University Law Center in 1977. At the firm, he developed a broad business practice, with particular emphasis on commercial real estate development, leasing, and commercial finance and has been involved in some of the largest real estate develoment projects in western Massachusetts, including representation of the Basketball Hall of Fame in connection with its Springfield Riverfront Project.
However, he was chosen to be honored by the REB because of his tireless volunteer work that goes well beyond his career achievements. He has been a member of the REB Board for its entire 25 years of existence; in fact he was directly instrumental in bringing this organization into being in 1979 by authoring its by-laws and initial articles of incorporation. He has been directly involved in all of the major initiatives that the Board has undertanen over the years. A notable example is that he was the key figure in bringing One-Stop Career Centers into Hampden County in 1995, piloting a group of business and community leaders in implementing these award winning agencies - Career Point and Future Works - which were not only the first to open their doors in Massachusetts, but the first in the nation. He has chaired the REB One-Stop System Committee for the past decade, overseeing all aspects of career center operations, always reminding staff that they are in place to serve all the people who come to the REB for help.
In addition to his work on the REB, for seven years he was an adjunct faculty member at Western New England College School of Law, is currently a trustee of American International College, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of New Leadership Charter School and counsel to that school. He has also been actively involved in a number of housing rehabilitation projects and provides pro bono counsel ot the Springfield School Volunteers, the Springfield Urban League and other non-profit organizations. He also serves as counsel to U.S. Lacrosse, Inc., the national governing body of lacrosse in the United States.
Craig's extraordinary achievements, unique style of leadership, and passionate dedication to public service embody the true spirit of volunteerism in our community.
