 | In 1967, business attorneys and law partners Louis Doherty and Robert Murphy joined with litigators and former law partners Frederick Pillsbury and Dudley Wallace to create a full-service law firm at 31 Elm Street in downtown Springfield. Over the next three decades, the firm grew into one of the largest law practices in Western Massachusetts, while maintaining the founders’ values of integrity, high standards, and public service. Indeed, some of the civic and charitable organizations served by the founders -- such as the Springfield Boys Club and the Springfield Library and Museums Association -- are today still served by members of the firm.
Louis Doherty and Dudley Wallace began practicing law in Springfield in the early 1920s. Louis Doherty, who graduated fromHarvard Law School, was following in the footsteps of his father, James, who had left the family farm in northern Maine to attend Harvard Law and had then come west to establish a practice in the Pioneer Valley. Dudley Wallace, also a Harvard Law graduate, was known for his sense of humor and his ability to forge strong relationships with clients.
The younger founding partners, Fred Pillsbury and Bob Murphy, both served in the Pacific in World War II. Fred Pillsbury, in fact, was offered a job in Hawaii after the war, but chose instead to return to New England’s less hospitable climate to complete his studies at Harvard Law School; he went on to become a Massachusetts Superior Court judge, a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and one of the premier trial attorneys in the Commonwealth. Bob Murphy, who graduated from Yale Law School, is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a recognized authority on taxation and estate planning.
