With about half of its attorneys focusing on litigation, Doherty, Wallace has one of the largest trial practices in Western Massachusetts. The firm’s diverse group of trial attorneys represents insurance companies and their insureds, businesses, nonprofit organizations, municipalities, school districts, and individuals. They serve as counsel in all types of matters, from insurance and product liability defense to employment, education, and disability cases to domestic relations and the defense of criminal prosecutions. Plaintiffs as well as defendants retain the firm to represent them in major personal injury actions.
Doherty, Wallace litigators appear before federal, state, and local courts, as well as before arbitration panels, federal agencies, municipal boards, and such Massachusetts agencies as the Appellate Tax Board, the Commission Against Discrimination, the Bureau of Special Education Appeals, and the Department of Environmental Protection.
Doherty, Wallace maintains one of the most active and successful insurance defense practices in the region. The firm serves as local counsel in the courts of Western Massachusetts for some of the country’s major insurance companies, as well as for dozens of smaller private insurance firms and for self-insured corporations of all sizes. Counsel provided in this area includes insurance coverage interpretation; lead paint poisoning and other toxic torts; automotive torts; product liability; municipal liability, including civil rights liability; and all types of premises liability from negligent security to liquor liability.
Doherty, Wallace has wide-ranging experience in the defense of professional malpractice litigation, including legal, medical, accountant, and real estate malpractice. In addition, the firm has considerable expertise in the defense of insurance-related malpractice claims, such as errors and omissions claims against insurance agents and brokers and actions in which insurance companies are named as defendants for allegedly deceptive claim practices.
Companies of all sizes and descriptions turn to Doherty, Wallace for counsel on the full range of business-related litigation, including breach of contract, shareholder suits, construction disputes, and eminent domain.
The firm’s trial attorneys generally handle a variety of cases, while maintaining expertise in one or more specialized areas. Doherty, Wallace, for example, has extensive experience defending employers against claims of wrongful termination; age, disability, and gender discrimination; and sexual harassment. The firm often represents school districts in special education, disciplinary, and other education-related disputes. Doherty, Wallace is one of the few firms in Western Massachusetts with significant environmental law experience.
