Ten states received Department of Labor grants for the creation of one stop career centers, but only Massachusetts used a free-market model, under which regional employment boards competed against each other for the funds. The Hampden County board became one of just two first-year implementors (Boston was the other), after a task force chaired by a Doherty, Wallace attorney wrote the winning proposal. The two career centers, in Springfield and Holyoke, provide job listings, counseling, and other employment services for employers, employees, and job seekers.
Doherty, Wallace is optimistic about the future economic development of Western Massachusetts and plans to be a part of this expansion. A firm attorney, for example, was actively involved in the creation of Mass Ventures, which formed a $13 million fund to provide seed money for start-up companies. Another firm attorney was a founding member and is now chairman of the board of Telitcom Development Corp., which works to develop the telecommunications industry in the area.
Doherty, Wallace has wide-ranging experience in the defense of professional malpractice litigation, including legal, medical, accountant, and real estate malpractice. Companies of all sizes and descriptions turn to Doherty, Wallacefor counsel on the full range of business-related litigation, including breach of contract, shareholder suits, construction disputes, and eminent domain.
